About The Weeds

14-16 inches, teenagers.

Here is a quote my good buddy Pilgrim Farmer John sent from his home in Iowa.  I mean if there is ever a guy or a place that knows about corn and weeds he does/ they do for sure.  And he quotes his wife’s grandfather, going back even further for this:

“I feel your pain! Forty or so years ago when I first started farming here on “the prairie”, Cathy’s wise grand father said: “You’ll work all your life at it, and the weeds will still be here when you’re gone”. ?”

I’m feeling part of that long proud tradition for better or worse.  Geez, talking about pushing the rock up the hill.  There is something I am supposed to learn here somewhere.

OK, off to the corn to get some lick in on it before work.  Work before work, get it.  It will all be worth it when we sit down to a platter of the fresh stuff in August I am sure.

Love, Felipe.x

  1. There’s nothing better than local August corn. Keep at those weeds. I like acknowledging that “the weeds will be here long after you’re gone.” Somehow it makes it less distressing to know that it’s not for lack of effort that we can’t stay ahead of them. They’re just happy healthy “plants.”

    1. Joy ~ Let me tell you, I have some of the happiest healthiest weeds around. I’ve got State Fair quality weeds going on here. Hehe. Hope to see you at corn time. Felipe.x

  2. Ok, Buddy, I got through my popcorn patch and now pretty much weed free! Late getting corn in– except for the transplants, which are same as yours, I’ve got 8″, 4″ 2″ and sprouts. Fingers crossed– but the 90 degrees every day and plenty o water makes corn happy.
How are you weeding? Not pulling weeds, I hope? I learned to “chop” weeds with a three cornered hoe, and it makes the work go pretty fast. Thinkin of makin an instructional video …
    Heh Heh

    1. Steve ~ always glad to hear corn news buddy. Wiley turned me on the hula hoe and I have been attacking with that mostly except up right close to the plant. But a guy only has so much energy and so much tolerance to the sun. I think I will get on top of it is a another week. At a certain point the corn is big enough to shade the weeds and that will take over soon. Phil.
