Hunkering Down

We don’t have to travel to see this beauty because we have William.

People are a little leery of travel and mixing it up with the general populace these days. Can’t hardly blame them with the current situation of the new virus spread. Our own Catalina from Berkeley was supposed to come up here later this month and is having second thoughts. Maybe we should just FaceTime it all for now and call it good.

It is a funny feeling to be hunted or haunted by this “bug”. It is acting like a very talented rookie. It will be quite successful early on I predict until we figure out it’s strengths and weaknesses and exploit it’s Achille’s Heel. Right now we are unsettled by our lack of knowledge. Well that’s me speaking, obviously no expert. It’s my impression.

Our county, King County, is currently a hotbed of cases and deaths. We are quickly becoming obsessed with tracking this. Hmm, strange feeling it gives me.

Well, the main defense seems to be our personal hygiene and practices. At least that gives us all something to do while we wait for it to blow over. Hopefully we will all, feel better about things by August and Veranda time.

Oh, and then today is Super Tuesday with all that hoopla. Well, I have my own list of things to accomplish today above and beyond what is going on out there. And Henriette will be here this afternoon, yup off I need to go.

A Sunday Night Movie

My Rebecca, one day at tapas.

My Rebecca was fishing around in the free movies for something for us to watch last evening and came across an early Kathy Bates film called “A Home of Their Own”. I probably mentioned at some point that Kathy and My Rebecca go back to high school days together in Memphis. And they were college roommates at SMU. So, what does that mean? It means that we must watch every film that Kathy was ever in, which is a bunch I can reassure you. Not that this is a chore but it is a thing.

Personally I rate films by how much I think about them the next day. This isn’t totally accurate because I have seen some really dreadful B Grade movies that haunted me but discounting that. Anyway, this film left a mark on me. So, here we are and you are going to hear about it.

The setting is LA and small town Idaho in the mid 1950’s. Kathy plays a mom with six kids who the hubby has run out on. Mom gets fed up with low rent LA and packs everyone up in their 1948 Plymouth jalopy for parts unknown to search for a home of their own. Yea, a pilgrimage.

The car finally breaks down in rural Idaho and Mom using every bit of her native intelligence and knowhow moves her clan into an abandoned house on Mr Moon’s property. Mr Moon nor the town is not too sure about the whole thing but over time Mom and the kids persist and win everyone over as they hurtle endless challenges. It is the kind of film that can wear you out and give you the definite feeling that your own life is not half bad.

On reflection the film seems to me to be about heroics in ordinary circumstances. It is not wartime nor in the midst of natural disaster nor famine nor in the midst of a bank robbery. The society’s times aren’t heroic only the protagonist’s personal times. It is the massive fight that some folks put up in the midst of the calm around them. Times are good aren’t they?

Off to walk. Overcast but dry out.

Straight Shooting

Some things are just coincidental right? I mean everything doesn’t mean something significant, right? It is just a once in a while thing, right? Anyway, had a dream last night or the night before, forget which, about shooting. Yea, as in hitting the mark.

As usual I am short on details but remember two important points. One, that Wiley, our son, did an amazing shot on a grouse as in “bringing home the bacon” kind of shot. And two, Cris (CSABC) was in it too. She was shooting in a contest using primitive rifles, early nineteenth century equipment. I was coaching her and she was doing great shot after shot; consistent she was. I bet she is laughing reading this, like what the heck? I know Cris you never fired a rifle in your life and here you are winning a contest!

I am writing this today because I found this pic of Annie Oakley, famous American shooter on FaceBook just a minute ago. That is the coincidence. But maybe you need to know this about Cris that she is consistently good, consistently on the mark, a real Annie Oakley. Hehe!

Sometimes we just have to go with dream inspired stories. Here at Caminoheads nothing is too small or too big to cover. For instance I just went out for more firewood and caught a glimpse of a raven flying overhead carrying a twig, somebody is building a nest close by.

OK, walk this afternoon at 3:30. It should be pretty.
