Well, Tapas Are In There Somewhere, Don’t You Think?

How come I keep coming back to tapas? No matter what the problem I seem to think that it is a good answer. Is it the big solution to all problems? The more I think about it the larger it grows. This all came from Steve Watkins‘ post on FB this AM. He was saying that maybe peace was more important than happiness. And I wise cracked that we can’t leave out tapas. Well, we can’t.

When a boat comes in to a harbor after a long rough day with work well done, is basically how I think about tapas. We all have dings and scrapes from the “work”. We may have done things and seen things which are heroic or stoic or regretful or beautiful. Tapas are the time to unravel those. Tapas are the time to celebrate and maybe that is above all.

We all have been missing them here at the ranch. Will we ever get back to it? Doesn’t seem like we will get there in the near future. But by August 2021 can it be done? Can we get some reasonable facsimile accomplished by then? That seems something to work for.

Off I go to work in the corn. The big race is on to keep ahead of the weeds. Corntine a’comin! That is the big challenge right now.

  1. Hi boss,

Oh gosh… I so very much relate to this post… in so many different ways…

In the Camino, I was always looking forward to the “bar” time, the time that after having a shower and laundry was done, we would go to the “bar” (or the albergue itself, there always was a pilgrim with bread and cheese and olives in his/her backpack!!!) and sit and meet with other pilgrims and talk until mass time.

Here at home, it is “Mate time”… afternoons at work are almost done… my batteries are almost going down… and my soul can only think on turning the kettle on, put the “yerba mate” in my mate cup, shifting it a couple times to take the dust off, and sit quietly for some “Mates”… Definitely, I miss the others to share it… remember? we pass along the mate cup and we sip from the same straw… when will be able to do the same in this Coronavirus times?… Who knows…

Yet, I keep thinking that the tapas or the mate are just an excuse to sit with others and let our minds and hearts and souls go out and play with theirs… And I am sure we are still able to do that in the physical distancing world we live in these days, and even on the screens… But I am so damn looking forward to hugging others anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would you be my neighbor? Love,
    Cris

    1. Cris ~ you and Ronaldo are right on top of commenting on this one. Make sure to read his. Yes, I hit a note that resonates. Tapas is such a REAL thing in my mind. Maybe the realist (if that is a word) thing. I remember having tapas with Mother Mary one evening. I found that report while rereading the blog from 2014. Let’s keep it real! Felipé.x

  2. ¡Hola, buenos días!
Excuse errors, I am writing this before first coffee but I had to respond. Yes, tapas are important. Even vital.
To me, that word is the Spanish code word for communion. Breaking bread together might be more the English expression. It is much more than small portions of food – it is time to focus on the moment with those at the table, to celebrate things, mourn other things, laugh, feel the love. To take time together.
Communion, sure there are mechanics involved, but so much more. Nourishment for our spirit and belly.
    Watch that corn!

    1. Ronaldo ~ yes, I am with you on everything. Read what Cris had to say on the Comments here about this. Hello to Ann. Felipé.
