Gleaning

Along Phil’s Cornmino. Good pic Sherie, thanks.

We are supposed to have a real rain tomorrow so I got all the rest of the corn harvested.  The drying racks are full now and ready for a couple of months till grinding for cornmeal.    This all started in April and here it is September.  Just a few ears that are fit for eating now and then it will be gone for another year.  So glad  that there were so many folks that got to sample it.

So, what’s next Felipe?  Well, I thought that I would try and sell bundles of the corn stalks for autumn decoration,  Maybe I could glean another hundred bucks from that.  People can put them out by their mailbox or on either side of their door.  Yea, a little ambience for the neighborhood.

Well, Mass tomorrow morning with Catherine.  Her turn to drive.  I am reading “Rediscovering Catholicism” by Matthew Kelly which is hightening my interest in Mass. Thank you to one of the Terri’s from the Marauders for giving me a copy.

Alright, time for ice cream, so fun when you have to gain weight.  See you tomorrow.  Love, Felipe.

  1. Hola Felipe!
Love that book by Matthew! One of our parishioners loved it so much they bought copies for the entire Parish! Now there’s commitment for you! I’m with you on making use of all you produce there in the cornfield. We always harvested a third of the stalks to make into bedding and fiber-food for the cattle. With the quantity of forage that’s produced, even two thirds of the forage that’s left is more than enough to maintain and increase the soil organic matter. About the only thing I’ll really miss about feeding a thousand head of cattle every year is all that “free” fertilizer they produced for me. 🙂
We’re about two weeks off from any crop harvest here. The corn and beans are both “turning” visibly each day now. We have the equinox in the middle of the week so we’re looking forward to the bi-annual stroll down our country road to watch the sun set smack dab in the middle of it. The kids really look forward to that, almost as much as we old folks!

    1. Juan ~ it has been so long that I was starting to worry about you. Glad that you are still kicking. Yes, the Matthew book. Very inspirational it is. He is got me to start a subscription to Magnificat so I can learn more about the Mass. Me the newcomer still trying to figure things out.

And the gleaning, yes, trying to squeeze one more drop out of it. I will try and take about a third of the stalks out to sell, the ones in the best shape. Then I can till the rest in.

Did you watch the start of the Ken Burns mini series? I thought he did a good job trying to make some sense out of that era. Hard for me to watch though. More fun tonight although slight conflict with MNF.

Juan, I was thinking about your equinox celebration with the sun setting in line with the perfect east/west road. Something very elegant about that. It seems to bring the haywire down to a simple understandable vision.

      Love you man, Felipe.
