Best Venison Roast Ever

Mount Rainer in the pink of the sunset last night on the way home from the hospital. Beautiful, yes?

My Rebecca went off the charts yesterday with a big venison roast she cooked all day long in the old crock pot. It was max juicy, falling apart tender and had great flavor. Venison isn’t beef, it has a wild taste and it is harder to cook due to the lack of fat. The challenge is to get the meat tender without drying it out. Her secret was she cooked it with some coffee and red wine. That sounds like a possible safety violation, trust she checked with the fire marshal on that combination.

I hear of folks escaping to Palm Springs and other destinations southerly but we are pretty happy hunkered down in the twenty degree weather here. This is cold for us but so far so good. The cougar has been around, the neighbor saw it a few days ago across the road. I’ll have to say that the wild kitties put a bit of spice in our walks.

Inside the house and driving I have been listening to my new love in music, the ensemble Pick Martini out of Portland Oregon. They have an international feel with a big band sound, very professional. And they make up for the show Portlandia that has been coming out of there for the last few years. Way creative but too goofy for me.

Yea, so I’m good I got the OK to hang with Pink Martini for a while in our afterlife from my Rebecca. She agreed that we wouldn’t always have to be together. She agreed pretty strongly on that actually. Guess that is one of the benefits of almost forty years of marriage.

So, the Martini is lead by Thomas M. Lauderdale who is playing the piano on the UTube videos. He is fabulous and obviously a musical genius at least and he is fun to watch. The highlights are the two female singers that he has managed to corral into the ensemble. Check out China Forbes singing Nina Nanna or Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love. Then there is Storm Large singing Splendor in the Grass and Amado Mio. Well, you’ll get the picture after that.

Hanging out with the band may be on the wilder side of heaven. Kind of fun to think about that, what is the wilder side of heaven? I’m thinking the harps and little puffy clouds are a rather unimaginative view really, good start but still. I can do better than that on a bad day.

Walking this morning in a few moments, sunny but cold. We’ll see who the hard core guys are. So happy that you came along for the blog. fun to be in contact with you, Southern or Northern Hemisphere, East or West, coastal or heartland. We got it all loves, Felipe.

  1. Ok, Buddy– that is your all time off the charts best post ever! I read it aloud to Jo and her comment through the laughter was, “He’s SUCH a great writer!”
Meaning and insight lying wait behind any apparent simplicity, ambushing our sensibilities again.

Cold here, too:12°. I tractor-plowed the driveway yesterday– you remember the skinny 1/4 mile blacktopo snaking along the 25′ bank along edge of the creek. heading out to check on Jo’s dad and hoping I got it cleared enough to drive on without too much of an ice layer. Beautiful in the extreme, but kinda wild, too. Maybe a glimpse of the wild side of heaven? Jo loves Pink Martini. Time to tune up the Pandora or whatever.

be well, keep up the attitude: it suits you well. Dr Slepyan would heartily approve.

  2. Hola, Amigo Felipe!

A short one from PFJ this morning, like the old song says “got a long way to go and a short time to get there”, getting this show on the road to head for southern climes on next Tuesday. One of my favorite uncles died yesterday, and his funeral will be on Monday. He was another “Alzheimer victim”, so his last years have been difficult ones. Glad that the timing worked out so that we can see him laid to rest before we’re off for warmer climes. Bills to pay and pre-pay and make sure Uncle Sam doesn’t go broke before April 15th. He’ll get my ounce of flesh early this year.

My message to you is “thanks”, as per usual. You have the capacity to bring a smile in the most challenging of times. Who else would have connected Pink Martini and Heaven? You rock, ol’ buddy.

    1. PFJ ~ sorry to hear about your favorite uncle. And where are you going down south, visiting Ken maybe? Well, have a good time. And Pink Martini seemed like a natch. That’s probably after doing that geology project that you had cooking. Man, we are going to be busy. Hello to Farmer Cathy, PFF.

        1. PFJ ~ OK, off on another big adventure. Looking forward to checking out your progress. Glad Farmer Cathy is there onboard to supervise. I will put this up on the blog today. PFF.
