A Flock Of Ducks

Keeping dry around the stove. (photo by Phil Volker)

Yesterday, just because, I bought a flock of ducks in the name of Caminoheads Blog. This was from the Heifer International website. I love Heifer. So a flock of ducks along with training will go out to some family somewhere out where it is needed. It was only $20 and that seemed like all I could afford after concluding my Christmas shopping.

But none the less we know that we are rich in more ways than we can count. We know that we have been granted so much. Yes, I know we have worked hard, yes. But things have gone our way more often than not you have to admit.

So, I am challenging you to give $20 to your favorite charity in the name of Caminoheads Blog and tell us about it. What kind of things will you come up with? This is a chance to toot you favorite’s horn.

Let me tell you about how Heifer got started. I think that it was roughly 1947 when the brand new state of Israel was founded. The Israelis were in need of so much. Some folks hired a ship and put out the word for seagoing cowboys (?) and bought up a herd of young cows and they set off across the Atlantic from the States. I’m not sure but I don’t think anything had ever been done like that before, well since the Ark. And Heifer is still offering opportunities for twenty dollars on up, like ducks, goats, honeybees.

Several years ago I pooled all my Christmas funds and bought a whole water buffalo that we all gave together. A water buffalo can cost you $250. Sounds like a deal to me, a little more than the price of a latté.

Well, Friday here and we are in the middle of a massive rain storm. Good weather for ducks they say. Time for me to start serving our fleet of vehicles. I can do that in the dry.

  1. Hi Phil,

How fun is to give someone a flock of ducks…! I wouldn’t know what to do with them in my tiny apartment in the city, nevertheless, it is fun!
And it is a nice to encourage us to do the same but in the name of our neighborhood… it will create some mystery in the receptor of the gift. In my case, it will SO VERY EXCITING!!! Let me tell you about Hector.

Hector is the “manager/housekeeper” (not sure which is the word in English) of the building in which I live. He comes every day, he has been with us since 2014; he cleans the common areas, he calls the electrician, water the plants, take out the trash cans, etc. Most importantly, he is our friend, he looks after each of us, he is always thinking how to make our lives easier and more comfortable, etc. And I am his favorite, so on top of all that, he spoils me (for example, he allows me to change the plants in the hall, or to do a mess while setting up the Christmas tree as last weekend, sometimes he dusts my car!… you can tell, I AM his favorite!)

Hector is very hard working, he has 2 buildings, so in the afternoon he goes to another place, but his work is not qualified and his salary is very low. It does help that because I have been born on 23Dec, I can tell that I am a Santa helper, and sometimes I can “write letters” to Santa on behalf of others and be attended with priority, so I have been telling Hector that all these years, I have written the letter to Santa and he has left an envelope for him in my house. This always makes him very emotional… because it is the opportunity to get something he normally isn’t able to afford…

Hector has a grand-daughter, who is going to be 15 next April and he wants her to have a 15th birthday party. He has been saving lots (doing more walking to skip busses, or bringing apples for lunch… -I noted that-) and I know it is for that cause. This year I wanted to help him with a bit more for this other cause, but I know he would be angry at me if “I” do that, but with this idea of yours, I can say it is not me, but my neighbors from Caminoheads… —-By the way, he does know all of you, You, Rebecca, PFJ, etc. because he always listen to my stories—- so it would be extremely cool to have this gift to him on the name of all of us and for this very loving cause of him…

He is an amazing human being. He would be a Caminoheads in a heartbeat!
Thank you SO much for this idea!!!
I am now off to the stationary shop to make a card for our gift!

  2. Cris,
I want to be part of this! Who do I send it to, and how do we convert US dollars? Does PayPal work?
